Ballard Awarded ‘GreenTech 2017’ Prize for Powering Fuel Cell Bus Fleet in Scotland

GreenTech Award v2VANCOUVER, CANADA and BERLIN, GERMANY – Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ: BLDP; TSX: BLDP) today announced that the Company has been awarded a special “GreenTech 2017” prize for powering Europe’s largest fuel cell bus fleet in Aberdeen, Scotland. The award was presented at a gala event held in Berlin, Germany earlier this month.

The GreenTech Awards were initiated in 2008 to recognize and gain public attention for projects committed to the protection of resources and the environment, and have developed into one of the most important environmental awards worldwide. Awards are presented in a number of categories, including: building & living; energy; communication; lifestyle; mobility; recycling & resources; travel; sport; and special prizes.

As noted on the GreenTech 2017 Awards website (http://www.greentec-awards.com/en), the city of Aberdeen Scotland has deployed Europe’s largest fleet of hydrogen fuel cell buses. Since 2014 ten (10) fuel cell buses provide zero-emission transportation throughout the city.

Ballard’s 150 kilowatt FCveloCity® fuel cell engines provide primary power for the buses operating in Aberdeen. These buses emit only water vapour, are quieter and run more smoothly than diesel buses. The Aberdeen fuel cell buses are part of a sustainable mass transit solution, which includes the use of wind energy to supply power for hydrogen generation through electrolysis. The fleet travels up to 400 kilometers (250 miles) per day in revenue service, transporting passengers to various destinations throughout the city of Aberdeen.

Oben Uluc, Ballard EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa) Sales Director said, “The excellent performance of our fuel cell engines in the Aberdeen buses has enabled that fleet to travel more than 1 million kilometers in cumulative revenue service to date. This positive experience, together with the successful operation of our fuel cell engines in a growing number of vehicles in Europe, China and North America is contributing to a significant ramp-up in fuel cell bus and commercial vehicle demand and sales momentum across all these geographies.”

The Aberdeen fuel cell bus fleet was funded by Europe’s Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH:JU) under the HighVLOCity and HyTransit programs.
